What is Exclusive Economic Zone? United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Part V establishes exclusive economic zone, which is an area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea, subject to the specific legal regime established in this Part, under which the rights and jurisdiction of the coastal State and the rights and freedoms of other States are governed by the relevant provisions of this Convention. What are the main gear types operating in FSM EEZ? Fishing activities range from subsistence and artisanal to industrialized commercial fisheries, providing the source for a day’s meal, employment, income, and recreation, as well as contributing to broader goals of social, economic and ecological development and sustainability. Recreational fisheries harvest fish for the thrill and challenge of catching (Pitcher and Charles 2002) as opposed to commercial fishing which is undertaken for profit (Moore and Jennings 2000). The people of the Pacific Island Nations are more familiar with subsistence fisheries with catch of fish being shared and consumed by fishers’ relatives while artisanal and small scale fisheries involve relatively small amount of capital and small fishing vessels whose catch is mainly for local consumption (Sharp, Benyami et al. 2005). Different types of fishing methods are employed for various fisheries targeted for various markets. There are three main industrialized commercial fishing methods (longline, pole and line and purse seine). Purse seine fishing activities is the dominant fishery in the EEZs of Parties to the Nauru Agreement and the one being managed by the Palau Arrangement. |
